Enduring Freedom 3 Sculpture

The Enduring Freedom series highlights the dichotomy of warriors fighting to ensure our freedom and security while living in fear of discharge for being gay. I wanted to commemorate the sacrifices these men have made for their country despite the discrimination they experienced. By referencing the plastic green army figures most of us had as kids it was my desire to present this issue in a familiar way. But more importantly the army figures also signified two aspects of how we construct beliefs as children, through play and interacting with others we construct views about the world and people in it. To many of us learned to hate homosexuals from an early age before we ever knew what that really meant. I remember saying horrible things about gay people as early as elementary school not knowing my favorite uncle was in fact gay. So using something as innocent as a toy but as deadly as a soldier I explored how we pass our prejudices to future generations and share my hopes that changes in laws and public opinion will see to it that future generations could play with heroes that love and fight with honor and happen to be openly themselves.
