About The Artwork

Named after the infamous sci-fi hero from the 1930's, this rocketship features an art-deco motif that prevailed in 1934 when Flash Gordon first frolicked throughout the galaxy and captured the imagination of kids of all ages. The fins are cut from vintage fan blades. You will also find a coffee pot, an antique insulator, a vintage cast-iron fence finial and a distributor cap. The unit features illumination in 2 places with a special animated flame bulb in back for thrust. Each of my original sculptures is painstakingly hand-constructed and designed to make a provocative statement that compliments any modern décor. THE FINE ART OF SPACE EXPLORATION: Repurposing vintage found-objects to a high level of aesthetics is not rocket science but it does require an evolved design sense, not to mention a deep appreciation of Americana. I dedicate a great deal of attention to creating sculptures that are truly artistic and truly captivating in their ability to transport you back through the good times while simultaneously launching your imagination to a futuristic world charged with excitement. I remember as the future unfolded right before my eyes in 1968. A gigantic space station, serenaded by The Blue Danube Waltz, spun weightlessly on the movie theater screen as 2001: A Space Odyssey fixed my creative trajectory to pursue a degree in fine art, establish a life-long career in art and design and eventually to work on what I call Retro Rockets: everyday mid-century items thoughtfully transformed into beautiful sculptures wired for lighting and other effects. My mission is to convert the ordinary, not only into extraordinary spacecraft, but also into time machines to those by-gone glory-days of space exploration and adventure.
