About The Artwork

The Story of Fonda: Fonda dresses as a faun – half human, half goat-and dances as well as plays the flute between trapeze acts. She wears horns made of driftwood tipped in silver for protection, she aspires to be a high flyer one day. She’s skimmed in tones of blues and greens, further emphasizing her otherworldly nature. Her hand touches her face because a little girl in the audience laughed at her taunting -“girls are princesses, not goats”. She wears a ring which her mother gave her before she died of tuberculosis. That’s actually how Fonda became an orphan; her mother died and her father, a sailor, was nowhere to be found and unable to be reached. The circus sounded like a suitable family replacement in the short term, that was 10 years ago. Fonda paints a star around her eye when she performs in honor of her father- the sailor who would circumnavigate by the use of the constellations. She has a red nose because the clowns have adopted her into their family. --- Fonda is a figurative sculptural portrait of a female faun, featuring horns made out of driftwood. Her hand is a sculpture mold of the artist's hand, draped in ribbon as it extends off the panel.

Creating art allows me to indulge in intense intimacy while exploring my independent ideas and ideals. I’m fascinated with the chemistry of humankind and nature, with a particular affinity for metal (or metallic) and wood, approaching a subject with the aged patina intact. Being a self-taught artist, I can’t hide behind technique. I strive to be an honest and emotional storyteller, albeit naive. The intimacy of my sculptural portraits derives from the fact that they are unapologetically flawed. The avalanche of texture does not attempt to hide inconsistencies, but rather a wabi-sabi tribute— seeing the beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. The portrait is both model and message— a statement of belonging and intention made visible. Whether it is man, animal or mythological creature, the viewer is engaged in cross cultural dialogue. Art is where all paths converge, and improbable connection made possible.
