The Story of Fortuna: Fortuna the fortune teller was once the bride of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun. Fortuna was the one who gave Icarus his wings of wax so they could travel together. She is bitter having lost her true love and suffers from crippling envy when she sees anyone in love. Her gift as a fortune teller has been marred by her bitterness. Even when she sees love in the cards, she withholds any words of romantic encouragement. Despite these shortcomings, she wields the power to grant you three wishes. She has a wait list of anxious clients. Fortuna is the sister of Othello, the Magic Man. ---- Fortuna is a contemporary mixed media sculpture featuring a metallic gold foil accented face and wing. Her beauty is in the details, as her third-eye is created from a spiral sea shell.

Creating art allows me to indulge in intense intimacy while exploring my independent ideas and ideals. I’m fascinated with the chemistry of humankind and nature, with a particular affinity for metal (or metallic) and wood, approaching a subject with the aged patina intact. Being a self-taught artist, I can’t hide behind technique. I strive to be an honest and emotional storyteller, albeit naive. The intimacy of my sculptural portraits derives from the fact that they are unapologetically flawed. The avalanche of texture does not attempt to hide inconsistencies, but rather a wabi-sabi tribute— seeing the beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. The portrait is both model and message— a statement of belonging and intention made visible. Whether it is man, animal or mythological creature, the viewer is engaged in cross cultural dialogue. Art is where all paths converge, and improbable connection made possible.
