I was invited by Longwood University to participate in a project where ten book artists would each produce a work interpreting poems by one of ten poets for an exhibition. I let all the other artists choose first, figuring I'd work with whomever nobody else wanted. Lucky for me it was Lucie Brock Broido, a stellar poet, and she had sent three poems, two about shotgun suicides and one an execution. I'm friendly with death, and I guess the other artists were freaked out by the subject. To me they are beautiful love poems. I printed five copies, bound four in flexible leather covers, and Copy No. 1, in this photo, is printed inkjet on J. Barcham Green handmade paper with a 1976 watermark, bound in dark teal goatskin with 23K gold title, chained to an oak electric chair (that I built). On the inside of the head restraint are three electrodes, and one electrode goes to the leg. An MP3 player on the head restraint plays my reading of the three poems. On the back of the chair is a cabinet containing a 20 gauge shotgun, a Manila hangman's noose, a wakizashi sword, razor blades, poison and a hypodermic syringe. It has been acquired by the Lloyd Sealy Library of John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

I've been making art and fabricating objects for six decades, using all sorts of materials and techniques, from a giant astrolabe commissioned to hang over a hotel bar to collaborating with other artists to construct installation works. Much of the art I am known for involves social commentary and working with materials that evoke the metaphor of the subject. I also create formal aesthetic works in color and spatial relationships, and produce decorative works. I am often commissioned to create bookbindings and books. These range from presentation copies for a best-selling author to prayer books for a monk, guest books for private homes, heads of government, museums, libraries, weddings, special events.... My unique and limited edition works are in more than a hundred museums and libraries in the USA and Europe, including the Victoria & Albert in London, the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, The National Gallery in Washington, the Getty Center in LA, Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag. In 2017 the Guild of Book Workers presented me with their Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2018 I was honored as Laureate of the American Printing History Association. In 2010 Yale University mounted the exhibition Material Meets Metaphor: A Half Century of Book Art by Richard Minsky.
