Freedom Sculpture

Freedom is by far my most ambitious and inspirational piece I’ve made to date. It exemplifies the style and expressions I work to achieve in my art and really makes an impressive image both in person and by photography. Many of my pieces don’t present as well with photography as in person. The nature of sculpture works counterintuitive to a 2 dimensional media. So it makes sense that when you photograph a sculpture, you loose the most valuable elements that define sculpture. But with Freedom, the lighting and contrast in the photograph gives the audience an entirely different, but just as for filling experience. I spend countless hours working on each feather and building up the shape and texture I wanted to achieve. Maybe because I get so ingrossed in my work, I can’t begin the calculate the time and entertainment I put into the piece. Many people ask if it is a hawk or eagle. To those people, I ask,”What do you want it to be?” Art is a very subjective subject, where one person sees the hawk, another sees the eagle. I want people to see what makes them happy. By leaving the paper white, it not only gives a more dramatic shadow and light play, but leave the viewer the liberty to be more creative with their perception. If you really must know, I was mostly inspired by images of a bald eagle, hence the title “Freedom”. This piece is made using a technique of paper sculpting that I have evolved over the past few years. In my earlier works, I layered pieces together to create the shape and form I was trying to achieve. As I continued to develop this technique, I wanted to achieve a more dramatic effect with light and shadow. I accomplished this by building up the substrate and layering over the framework. Submit
