About The Artwork

G-NOM is an anagrammatic naming after the Mon-g-olic basalt used. The work can be described as plastic sculpture if one defines sculpture in such a way that the form is created by removing material and the sculpture, after the Greek verb “plassein” (to form) as a form that is built up. Because Christoph Jakob has used a new process in this work: he uses the riving knife to break open the glass-hard material at precisely defined fracture points, makes incisions in the “fragments”, creates serially arranged webs, round drill holes, rectangular or square open spaces and reassembles the individual elements. In this way, the artist reconstructs human life in all its facets in an exciting way, which, analogous to the stone, is traversed by incisions and upheavals. Humans also go through transformation processes and are forced to adapt and change.

"Basalt...columns, spheres, plates, bombs, gray, brown, black, ocher, rugged and soft. I love these frozen forms that tell stories of eruptive power and the cool core that can be peeled out of them." (Christoph Jakob) The transformation of the original stone shape to the final sculptural appearance reveals Jacob's artistic energy and creativity. Nothing can be seen of the difficult work process when the sculpture rests on its pedestal, as the artist always knows how to maintain a harmonious balance between his creative interventions and the stone's own dynamic. (Elisabeth Claus, NVK Aschaffenburg)
