About The Artwork

'Gaia' out of Granite, or Syenite to be more specific, towers over two meters tall and was conceived some twenty years ago, when I was given a giant block of stone by a friend. Over the next two decades she slowly emerged, as the carving was exclusively done by hand, i.e. hammer and chisel. When other interests and commissions intervened, taking me off the path, it turned harder to get back into the 'zone' of the original intent to finish her. I did a little bit of work, whenever there was time and inclination. Finally, this year, I had a break in my busy schedule of successive commissions and was able to complete her in a four month marathon. The total time dedicated to working on her, I estimate, took about two years; two months just for the polishing. I feel the work is more poignant and important now, then ever before. Gaia is seen holding the horn of plenty, a cornucopia of earthly delights, which she lavishly showers upon the world, and us, her children. Depictions of fruits, vegetables and flowers flow into the folds of her dress. On her crown- depicting growth patterns in nature -she wears the symbol of a bee, marking her out as the guardian of the insect realm, as well as the animal kingdom and flora. As we all know, without bees, there not only wouldn't be any honey, but plant life and its productive cycle itself would be at stake. And ultimately all life on this planet, including that of us humans. On the rear side she is seen wearing an archaic mask, spewing forth her off-springs, the ungrateful human species, in a succession of tumbling bodies, like a fall from grace or the descending of the damned. This is her destructive Kali aspect- the great devourer of souls - as part of the cycle of life, death and rebirth - like the seasons of the year, or the seasons of man: everything is born to die. I have always felt the Earth to be a living entity, one that ought to be revered and respected. We are but the custodians of this bountiful realm, that sustains and nourishes our existence, and are here to save it from harm and pass it on to future generations. This Earth is the common ground that we all share under our feet, regardless of creed, color or nationality. An all encompassing natural science, or religion, transcended into beauty through art, skill and dedication.

Soeren Ernst, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. I felt a strong calling to work in the three dimensional from the age of 17. At 19 I worked in the studio of German sculptor Joerg Plickat for a duration of two years. Travelling through Europe as a 'journeyman' I became a young independent sculptor and had first exhibitions in Scotland, where I also won 1st price in 'The arts of Scotland' competition, Pennicuik. On first visiting Portugal in 1989 I fell in love with the country and its people and the great variety of stones available for the sculptor. Since the 1990s I spend the summer in Germany and the winter months in Portugal.
