About The Artwork

We were commissioned to create the courtyard for the Hospital in 2009. Our artwork is a freestanding glass and metal structure in a landscaped garden with trees and perennials inside the women’s maternity unit of the Central Manchester University Hospital. The clear glass of the Victorian inspired structure is delicately enameled with hand drawn imagery. It is appropriate, uplifting and beneficial to all who use it, and continues to excite as a ‘venue’ for Pop Up temporary exhibitions (all weather proof!). To keep this installation ‘alive’ we have over the last year, installed within one day, an art work or presented a performance that literally popped up! The artists are visible and available throughout the installation so that the audience can observe, and respond to, the creative process. The exhibitions remain for a short period of time after which all evidence is removed as if nothing had been there. This combination of the artwork itself with the programme of mini exhibitions creates interest, comment and expectation with the hospital community. Now this same audience has taken ownership of, and participate in transforming the Glass Summer House themselves; a positive result as far as we are concerned. We have collaborated with Lime Arts, the staff of the Ultrasound Department and other artists in the development of the Summer House, and with architects and civil engineers in the design of the structure. http://thesummerhouseblog.blogspot.com

Lauren Sagar and Sharon Campbell have been working together as Sagar and Campbell since 2005. Based in Manchester at Rogue Studios they work in both the fields of contemporary visual art and architectural glass design: making sculpture, installation and interventions in gallery spaces and public settings (including public squares, social housing estates and building interiors). They make connections between people and create temporary communities both face to face and online. Motivated by the personal, everyday and the familiar, they create transformative work which speaks of a sense of place, identity and community. They are vastly experienced at working with people (in many different contexts), their process is playful and experimental, yet also engaging and accessible, about exploring narrative and turning conversations into something significant. Highly skilled, their methods include a strong use of form and shape alongside sensitive responses to site and context. They integrate conceptual ideas with a strong understanding of the properties and characteristics of a range of materials including found objects, glass and textiles to create resonant meaningful sculptural work.
