About The Artwork

‘Gothic’s Lost Reflection’ is a celebration of the term ‘Gothic’ and it’s connection through architecture, literature, music and people throughout time. All things Gothic have been at battle with something already existing that is more conventional and seen as more classical therefore more beautiful and moral. Ornaments potential to convey message (it’s meaning) is held in the forms, patterns and motifs it chooses. These convey style that represent a way of thinking. In the case of the Gothic style this was of unconventionality and non conformity. It was also of subordination to a higher power which is why the eye is always led upwards in Gothic Art. Gothic ornament depicted a sincere love of nature. as opposed to Renaissance and modern styles of ornament where you will find a love of the classical, the humanistic, of wealth and formality.

Alicia Hurrell creates sculpture and installation where ornament is subject. The artist constructs her work from an array of traditional as well as contemporary mediums, such processes relevant to the concept of her work. She works with wood, metal and plaster and models in clay, sometimes casting these to create powerful rhythms of colour and at other times firing and glazing. She cuts and manipulates acrylic to mimic motifs and fabricates with varied textiles and accessories, adding these fabrications to the once merely functional form. In her work, the object moves from having a functional role to that of art. The artist explores styles of ornament and their potential for meaning. She seeks to enhance the symbolic value of objects through her creations of form and style sometimes injected with colour. The artist wishes to signify the potential of ornament to be more than mere decoration and instead communicate connections between the past and present.
