About The Artwork

The orange 'growth' seen in the artwork is a sacred thread known as Mauli in India. The priests conducting Indian rituals tie the sacred thread around the wrists of people attending the rite. People believe in the power of Mauli as a thread which gives them protection and happiness. The sacredness of Mauli emerges from the belief people have in the thread, transforming it into something meaningful and holy. Besides tying the sacred thread on wrists, it is also tied around trees 108 times for wish-making as every part of the tree is considered holy and that any spirits residing in the tree would grant your wishes. Mauli functions as a medium for protection against negativity and for wish-making as well. Therefore, this small sculpture conveys how Mauli and nature combine together to represent spirituality and beliefs of many Indians around the world.
