About The Artwork

The work illustrates the imagined pulmonary cycle of heart and lungs during an agitated mental state, e.g. in love, stress, fear etc. The idea was to try and capture and present the actual physical reality of this fleeting and almost indescribable moment that everyone experiences, some more often than others. At it's peak, the closest worded description is that it's like a heart pumping for four sets of lungs, something which I've tried to literally translate into physical form. They were made using a traditional medical archival method called 'corrosion casting'. This involves injecting resin into the empty space in organs usually reserved for blood and air. The organs were then placed in acid for two weeks with the remaining flesh meticulously removed from each cured cast(with dental tools). What you see here then, is the resin cast of the negative spaces in the heart and lungs after the muscle and tissue has been eroded away; the unseen, but hyper-realistic physical representation of a state, beyond the realms of traditional medical descriptions. I'm fascinated by this intersection of science (and its systems of order) and humanity
