About The Artwork

I’m Late, I’m Late is part of the WIRED series in which sculptor Camey McGilvray examines the frenetic pace of contemporary life with its bombardment of 24/7 information and the effects that electronic devices and constant connectivity have on inter-personal relationships. The title WIRED refers not only to being up-tight but also to being equipped with all the latest electronic gadgets deemed essential to contemporary communication. The incorporation of actual wire into each piece, uses the properties of the material itself to further the narrative. I’m Late, I’m Late is a wood and wire wall sculpture that is composed of eleven layered wooden shapes embellished with wire and painted in rich oils colors with dark streaks etched in the wood for emphasis. The multi-faceted, scattered, high speed nature of contemporary culture is depicted in this kinetic construction showing the 24/7 access of information is the blessing and curse of our time. Taking in and responding to the steady blast of information can keep us running late all the time. This WIRED series captures slices of life in hyperdrive. I’m Late, I’m Late, highlights the fact that our indispensible electronic devises, while they are great time savers, are also great time consumers, with their enticing offerings and demands for attention night and day.

Camey Mcgilvray is a Los Angeles based artist who uses wood, wire and metal to create abstract, contemporary wall sculptures and freestanding sculptures. The work is purely imaginative and evocative rather than representational and relies on the shape and placement of the materials, as well as cast shadows, color and texture to convey the idea to the viewer. McGilvray was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied art at St. Lawrence University, the University of the Americas in Mexico City, and the New School and Art Students League in New York City, where she lived before settling in Los Angeles. Her work is included in private collections and exhibited nationally.
