What is this body? What do we call "life"? Is a breath just air or is there something more to it than what we understand? In the need to find some satisfying answers to these personal yet universal questions, I began an investigation into the Self. Over the last decade my experiences have started to have a voice in my ceramics and installations. The work focuses on capturing the contrasting attributes of the internal and external spaces that a being occupies. The subject matter is in the heart of all my works. In every possible way that sometime it takes the form of the abstract wall pieces that I create with hand formed porcelain, the This piece is part of a series of three. The pieces are reconstructed from porcelain paper clay using my body. The outerhighly textural surface is created with volcanic glaze and inside is contrasted with smooth lightly coloured tin glaze. The pieces are fired several times 1245 C as well as 1080 C in Oxidation. The piece is water and weather proof.

BELGIN BOZSAHIN was born and brought up in Turkey and has been living in London for the last three decades. She has exhibited in Istanbul, London, Bergen and on the QE2 liner. Many of her works are in private collections in Turkey, UK, Ireland, Portugal and the USA. Drawing on the themes of existence, self and identity Belgin creates sculptural ceramic works and installations. Working with such powerful themes, she is able to draw on personal understanding and knowledge that helps her relate and communicate with others. Life shapes us like a sculptor; what constitutes the material boundary of the body - the skin, is embellished with a patina that has built up over a lifetime of experience. Belgin's extraordinary sculptures exemplifies the notion of accumulating layers forming strata and hiding something beneath that can be easily read by the viewer. Her Beneath the Surface and Abstract wall series examines the notion of continuing evolution and change; that things are not perfectly smooth, spotless or still. She says that her work is about the contrast between inside and out and the tension this creates. Perhaps the work epitomises the dynamic force inherent in all of life's many layers weaving its magic allowing textures to morph and create anew.
