"Inside the Horizon" Sculpture - Limited Edition of 9

Lydia Smith’s practice is rooted in automatism, a process that allows intuition to lead and the unconscious to shape each work. She begins without fixed ideas, allowing her research, thoughts and experiences to surface intuitively. Through her practice, Smith explores the theme of human connection, drawing from the intertwined histories of ancient beliefs, technological progress, scientific inquiry, and spiritual exploration.

From this state of openness, she examines the hidden systems that shape who we are, from subconscious conditioning to the codes written in our DNA, questioning where instinct ends and identity begins. A dialogue unfolds between line and form as geometry takes shape across both material and immaterial worlds. Moving between her hands, to the software, and back again, she builds a rhythm between process and thought.

The finished works hold a sense of balance and quiet intensity, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect. For Smith, sculpture is a grounding force that anchors us between our physical and digital selves, commanding presence across both tangible and virtual realms.


Biography

Lydia Smith (b. 1995) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges historical and contemporary processes. Based in London, she creates sculpture, works on paper, and digital art to explore the nature of human connection, drawing from the intertwined realms of ancient history, technology, science, and spirituality.

Working primarily with clay, Smith approaches her material through intuition, allowing form and concept to emerge subconsciously. Once complete, each work is translated into the digital world through her own hybrid process, where tactile gestures become data, and new geometries evolve.

Smith trained in academic sculpture at the University of the Arts London (2014–2017) and at private ateliers in Greece, Spain, and France. She has exhibited at Christie’s, the Saatchi Gallery, and Bowman Sculpture and presented her solo exhibition Pause in Soho, London. Her work has been featured in The Telegraph, The Guardian, Mayfair Times, L’Officiel and ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ.
