About The Artwork

This wall hanging Original sculpture is inspired by the inner workings and microscopic components of the human Brain. The piece was inspired by a concept of identity and looking for ourselves in the complex net of synapses and neurons. we are hidden within the gray matter, and everything we are and do is the result of Billions of electrical firing synaptic connections. I hand sculpt my artworks with a unique smart medium called polycaprolactone, that is a low melting point friendly plastic which allows me to hand craft fragile looking surreal organic forms that are actually very durable.

Claire is an artist who is most recognisable for my white abstract biomorphic ‘polymorph’ sculptures. She predominantly creates her Sculptures from a heat reactive smart medium plastic. It has unique properties that allow the artist to apply various heating techniques and then hand sculpt fragile looking forms that will remain strong and flexible when re solidifying at room temperature. Claire is a pioneer in the fine arts for utilizing this smart plastic and won the Signature art award for her unique style with this medium in 2010. “I find it is the best medium to express my surreal and biomorphic nature inspired forms and the medium itself has such intuitive properties I connect with when making my work. Some sculptures often informed by the medium during their creation, the medium taking on a life of its own and resulting in different intended artworks almost serendipitously.” “The properties and nature of the medium is an integral part of the sculpting process, which informs the strange intrinsic biomorphic forms that make up my sculptures.” Resulting in a series of varying works from biomorphic organic to geometric minimalistic abstracts that defy gravity. “My artworks were inspired from a very early age (and still are today) by the natural world at a microscopic level, hidden curious microscopic imagery of flora, fauna and the human body. Delving into expressing my personal wonders of where science meets art.” Since finding the medium during her time at Fine art university. She has become one of the first artists in the world to use the smart material polycaprolactone solely as a fine art medium to solely produce her work and exhibited her created works in fine art galleries across the UK. “I love innovations and am a big science fan, I loved the idea of taking advantage of a scientific breakthroughs in technology that artists of the past did not have access to and using the Plastic mediums unique abilities to make my sculptures.” Initially as a big fan of nature and advocate of environmental conservation and natures flora and fauna conservation. I was a little concerned with the medium I had fallen in love with making works from being a plastic, but I was pleased to find out that this thermos smart plastic is different in many ways to conventional Petrochemical plastics.
