Mona Lisa in String Sculpture

A modern reincarnation of one of the worlds best known works of art - Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. 3000m of thread is strung as straight lines from 288 nails on the circumference of a 90cm diameter wooden circle. I am interested in exploring the boundaries between maths, philosophy and art. I chose the Mona Lisa for the subject because it provides an instantly recognisable image, whether formed from pencil, paint, or string. My work utilises the memory trace that is present in anyone familiar with Da Vinci’s piece as up close, the image is not discernible and does not elicit any particular response in the viewer. Further away and from a different perspective, the memory associated with the original artwork is unlocked and thus Da Vinci's thoughts are transmitted across time and space through the correlation between some strands of string.
