This gorgeous native NZ bird is handcrafted out of Northland swamp Kauri and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, carbon dating the wood to between 30,000 - 50,000 years old. This sculpture depicts a native NZ Kea Parrot, sitting on a tree branch. The wood has that fantastic Kauri colour tone. Wall mounted with brass fitting. Signed by artist Tony Howse. More art can be viewed at Kauri, dating back to the Jurassic period, are amongst the largest and longest living trees in the world. The British came to the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand to fell Kauri in the 1830 - 1890's, used for spars for their warships. Kauri’s unique quality of having a mostly branchless trunk, provided knot-less timber with extraordinary strength. Later, the trees were exported to America to build the city of San Francisco during the gold boom, and to the UK to refurbish the City of London. Early loggers would take the trunk and leave the head and root system of the tree behind. Sculptor Tony Howse has devoted himself to recovering what Kauri head remain and he collects this precious wood all over the Coromandel Peninsula. Within the knotted, twisted and ancient wood, lies timber grain of extraordinary colour and beauty. Guided by the contour and patterns of the wood, Tony spends a long time contemplating each individual piece of salvaged Kauri, to see what form hides within before he starts the work of sculpting, uncovering the form. Kauri sculpture pieces of interest online can be photographed from different angles and images and video sent to clients for viewing before purchase. All art from Kauri Cliff Art Gallery by Tony Howse is fully insured and ships in a custom-built professionally made crate.

KAURI SCULPTURE AT ITS FINEST BY AWARD WINNING ARTIST Tony Howse has been sculpting New Zealand native timber for over 30 years. His appreciation and knowledge is reflected in his works, creating beautiful Kauri artworks that embrace New Zealand's natural environment and cultural history. Every piece is unique, and tells its own story. The Coromandel, New Zealand has been a major influence in his exploration of sea life and the coastal landscape through his salvaged Kauri wood sculptures. Tony began sculpting in 1991 and has exhibited and won awards many times in galleries and at art shows throughout New Zealand. Private collectors in Europe, America and Japan have acquired most of his work to date.
