About The Artwork

The “Octable” is hand carved from Birch plywood with internal steel reinforcement. The table top is made from low iron, toughened glass which gives greater clarity than other toughened glass. Three of the tentacles extend slightly over the glass top to hold it in place. These tentacle tips are removable to assist in shipping with the glass removed. A long time ago, when I worked with dolphins, I was also charged with looking after an aquarium section. Here we had some large tanks displaying local fish species. One of the most popular residents was a curled octopus. It was absolutely fascinating. I would spend hours watching this amazing cephalopod stalking and attacking crabs. For many years since, an idea has been forming in my mind to produce this octopus table (octable) and although it has taken me some time to design and carve (around a year in total), I am extremely happy with the way that it has turned out.

I live and work in Kent, in the UK and have been a full time sculptor for over 20 years. My first career was working with animals, and this still has a large impact on my life and work. I spend quite a lot of time carefully selecting the medium for my sculptures that will best produce the effect I want to achieve. Maybe this is by the use of the figuring in the grain of a unique piece of timber, or perhaps by utilising the striking effect achieved with the contemporary medium of plywood. Sometimes the smooth effect of bronze is the best way to portray an idea. I am self-taught, although I have spent much time talking with and exchanging information with carvers and artists from all over the world. My works are also produced in limited edition bronze and silver. I am a professional member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (part of the Federation of British Artists).
