About The Artwork

I have always been fascinated by how sculpture can tell a story. While creating boxes with my students years ago, we began making boxes with hiding places, similar to the Egyptians did with burials. With that in mind, I decided to create a series of four tables, based off the fable of Pandora's Box, for a show I was in. On this piece the box appears to be suspended between the tables curved legs. The piece is made of mahogany, cherry, and purple heart. There are many intricate curves and angles and the box is parallel to the table top. The piece when sanded is applied with multiple coats of hand rubbed finish.

I am a sculptor, woodworker, photographer, raised in Rochester, New York and currently living and working in Prescott, Arizona. My path has taken me in many directions. Years ago I was seriously wounded in Viet Nam. The injuries were many but more importantly I lost much of the use of my left (primary) hand and the sight of one eye. This event forced me to adapt and focus more keenly on my surroundings, my direction, and defining who I am as a person. I received a degree in Studio Art at SUNY Brockport and while there, I studied sculpture and furniture design with renowned sculptors, Wendell Castle and Albert Paley. At that time I also began my photographic experience and realized I had a knack in all media for looking beyond the big picture and focusing on life's minute details. I received a Masters Degree in Art Education from Nazareth College and I worked as an art teacher both in NY and Arizona for close to 25 years. Through my work and my teaching I've tried to convey an appreciation of the joys of life, whether through art or the simple act of helping others. Artistically my path has taken me in many directions. Creating photography and furniture with a focus on the sculptural beauty in both, I continue to get closer and to see what others might not.
