This is one of a series of experimental works made with the intention of illustrating that there can be more beauty 'inside' something than the 'outside' would suggest. To emphasise this, melted and fused coloured glass has been used for its originalilty since it is uncommon that this media is used to this extent and effectiveness with ceramics. The intention was to enable the maximum number of pockets into which glass could be melted to represent the extent and complexities of a subject, albeit in as small a form as possible - emphasising that small can be beautiful and complex as well. The depth of the work is decepetive insofar as the inside looks far deeper than it actually is, because of the intensity of the colours and layers. Rather than an open top, as in some of the others in this series, the edge was turned in so as to force anyone looking at the work to focus more on the overall effect rather than allowing just a cursory glance. If placed on its side a light directed at the work demonstrates the vibrants of the colour and the inside further. From start to finish a piece of work of this nature will take anything up to 40 hours to make as there is the: preparation of the coils; building and carving; first firing; underglazing; glazing; preparation of glass; and the second firing of work. Plus there is also the cost of the clay itself, the expense of the firing process (twice) plus the underglazes and glazes.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
