Hugh's work uses line, color, and shape to express the spirit and nature of our urban environment. The collections explore abstract interpretations of “circular sightings” and the land we live on. Investigations started when observing the composition and complexities of our highway interchanges and land patterns. All civilizations across recorded human history have had great engineering feats and divided the land. Feats that defined their age. Not unlike the pyramids of Egypt, I believe highways are the symbol of our era and the land shows our marks. My current body of work invites you to explore the myriad lives that have traversed the land. Each work reveals a landscape marked by division, brought to life through historical land deeds, handwritten letters and ledger lists. My sculptures transform antique farming, blacksmithing, and land surveying tools into contemporary totems. Together, these elements chronicle humanity's fleeting presence on earth, juxtaposed with the land’s enduring essence. As the sun rises and sets, we become part of the land’s history, a testament to our brief moment in time.
