About The Artwork

I’ve often thought of attempting to show or tell about the progression of an artwork. But then I realized that sometimes a work takes years to coalesce, sometimes it goes though many manifestations and sometimes it never becomes anything at all. ROOF OVERHEAD came together relatively quickly and stayed much the same. The main element of the chair was found at a vintage mall by a friend who called and urged me to “come see the butler chair!” I asked her, “what is a butler chair?” I learned that it was a chair made for the “man of the house” to hang his suit coat, and store his wallet, keys and cufflinks on. The the top piece was for the coat and the tray for small items. When I first saw the chair I thought it was in too good a shape (it still had a seat!) but I liked its unusualness, so I got it. The top of the chair looked like a roof to me, which reminded me of Lincoln log roofs that as a child I always had trouble constructing. I’m often brought back to feelings from childhood when surrounded by the old wooden toys and games I collect and frequently use as art materials. I imagined the chair as a type of body wanting the protection of a roof but instead had a roof that wasn’t functional. The house hangs suspended half built and at the mercy of the elements. Parts of a child’s crib, as arms or wings, enclose or attempt flight. Those on the ground search, beginning to move beyond their given roofs. This work speaks about moving out of the static and into the dynamic ebb and flow of life. The title ROOF OVERHEAD refers to the saying, “at least you have a roof over your head!” ROOF OVERHEAD is made from a butler chair, Lincoln log pieces, a badminton racket, a wooden coat hanger, croquet mallet, doll crib parts, parts of a boat, chess pieces, a small clog and hardware, all joined with love.
