About The Artwork
This form was initially chainsawed from a discarded section of a tulip tree trunk. I then roughly smoothed the ball by "bouncing" the chainsaw on the surface. Next the piece was smoothed with chisels and the divots were cut out to fit the quahog shells. The images in the shells are taken from a book of photographs of snowflakes under a microscope. These were printed and decoupaged into the shells and tinted with watercolor. About ten years after making this sculpture, I realized it was referencing sky, water, and earth.
