About The Artwork

Sorry I Missed You is part of the WIRED series in which sculptor Camey McGilvray examines the frenetic pace of contemporary life with its bombardment of 24/7 information and the effects that electronic devices and constant connectivity have on inter-personal relationships. The title WIRED refers not only to being up-tight but also to being equipped with all the latest electronic gadgets deemed essential to contemporary communication. The incorporation of actual wire into each piece, uses the properties of the material itself to further the narrative. In Sorry I Missed You, the abstract wood and metal circuit board figures seem to be running toward each other but somehow never really connecting. Like the real life people they represent, their electronic equipment enables them to engage in a constant stream of communication with more and more contacts but the depth of these connections may be limited. Are more words reaching but fewer touching? This WIRED series captures slices of life in hyperdrive. Sorry I Missed You highlights the isolating effect of digital communication, which despite all its convenience and obvious benefits, is no substitute for unedited, face-to-face interaction.

Camey Mcgilvray is a Los Angeles based artist who uses wood, wire and metal to create abstract, contemporary wall sculptures and freestanding sculptures. The work is purely imaginative and evocative rather than representational and relies on the shape and placement of the materials, as well as cast shadows, color and texture to convey the idea to the viewer. McGilvray was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied art at St. Lawrence University, the University of the Americas in Mexico City, and the New School and Art Students League in New York City, where she lived before settling in Los Angeles. Her work is included in private collections and exhibited nationally.
