About The Artwork

This original, sculptural artists’ book is part of the Infinity Series, a series of works created to illustrate the journey of the human soul and attempt to define perspectives on transcendence through the use of symbols, techniques and materials. The sculpture uses repetition of imagery and a spiral as a symbol of infinity. It refers to the idea that individuals stay with us eternally as long as we retain memories of them. The choice of etching as a means to make the imagery is also relevant as the process itself requires the maker to create impressions onto surfaces to print from, leaving long-lasting marks. This in itself is suggestive of the impressions that others can have on our lives.

Louisa Boyd graduated in 2001, showing a series of paper sculptures that used bookbinding techniques to support their structures. These artist’s books gained recognition with awards at this early stage in her career. Boyd has since worked as an artist exhibiting both nationally and internationally. Her work has been incorporated into a number of publications and also included in both national and international public collections with pieces held at King St Stephen Museum, Hungary, Baylor University, Texas, USA, The Grosvenor Museum, Chester, UK and Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, UK. Recent successes have seen her gain further recognition through exhibitions selected by prestigious juried panels and showing her work alongside some of the most well-established and respected names in contemporary art. Shortlisted for the John Ruskin prize in 2017 and having been selected for exhibition on three occasions for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Boyd continues to make paintings, prints, artist’s books and paper sculptures. Her pieces honour traditional techniques such as hand marbling and acid etching yet innovate in the application of these skills. She uses abstract mark making and an explorative and inventive approach to realise new pieces which often have three-dimensional qualities.
