About The Artwork

In 2017, I moved from Switzerland to Alicante, Spain where I have a woodshop; a space that allows me to work on a series of wood carved sculptures using local woods like olive, oak, eucalyptus, gall. , The selection of these pieces is the beginning of my creative process. Though this series of sculptures one can feel my passion for the material’s character, textures, roughness. These wood pieces were chosen because of their strength, of the marks live leaved on them. We both have had a hazardous live and the marks left are the witnesses of our will to survive. When I began carving, the world around disappears, I can feel the form unveiling in front of me; it is a long and fulfilling process. Simplicity and emotion are what I seek in this series of work. Each sculpture is fixed onto a back wooden base (finished with felt to preserve the furniture) the signature is engraved on a black metal plate. A certificate of authenticity comes with the sculpture. . SPONDILUS, a type of seashell used by the Incas as part of their jewels and as offerings to their Gods. The roughness of the bark and the different colors of the wood led me to this piece that reminds me of my origins. Movement, grace, contrast of surfaces and the uniqueness of its colors complete this unique sculpture.

Ursula Nunez was born Ursula Cornejo-Soto at Arequipa, Peru in1963. I have lived studied, worked and in Peru, USA, Thailand, Switzerland and Spain. This life experience has opened my eyes to various cultures and art influences and this is reflected in my artwork. I have produced a wide-ranging body of work: sculptures, prints and mixed-media artworks. Experimenting with new materials and techniques has always interested me. The idea of recycling came from my early collagraphs, and I have continued to explore this idea. Since 2018, I have a workshop in Alicante, Spain; where I started working on a new series of sculptures using local wood. This series of works are influenced by my interest on recycling and on the metamorphoses of the carved oeuvre. Therefore, I have chosen wood pieces that nobody wants because of their odd forms, nots, roots etc. The selection of these pieces is the beginning of my creative process. Simplicity and emotion are what I seek in this series of work. .
