Essential timepieces with the most extraordinary complications, precise chronometers and chronographs, crucial machines of precision... mechanical pocket or wrist watches that have faithfully guided man during more than four hundred years pointing out its vital time, marking its technological pulse, contributing in the exactitude of its scientific progress. One of the most important technical advances of the humanity which its leadership is decreasing with the implantation of the digital era and that, paradoxically, is loosing its definitive battle against the Time. One of the characteristics that share big part of the Kpavio’s sculptures is the mix between the universes of the skulls and their watchmaking pieces. Precisely, in this piece, the artist points the attention on the most important technical advances of the last centuries, the mechanical watch, which has not only enabled to measure the vital pulse of men, but it has enormously contributed in the precision and development of the scientific progress. In order to transmit the historical evolution of this indispensable invention for the humanity, a bilayer painting of high quality was chosen with the purpose of endowing the original skull with an intense green color that appeals the four hundred years of history of the mechanical watch. Previously, there were certain hesitations on the cranium which after the painting process, it allowed to delicately embed a total of twenty nine watchmaking mechanisms, true collector’s pieces, in which there can be found ancient mechanisms older than two hundred and three hundred years; without a doubt, the skull is a spectacular compilation of pieces that symbolize the vivid history of this indispensable technical advance. The piece was crowned with an incomplete superior denture, only composed by eight practically worn down teeth, which represent the logical deterioration that have suffered the mechanical watches during their dilated trajectory, but also the unfortunate downturn in which they are subjected. And this is the last concept that grants a paradoxical message to the piece that pretends, on one hand, to highlight the fundamental role that plays the mechanical watch during its extended years of history, and in the other hand, to accentuate the evident decay in which it is subject to the irruption of the digital era, which, irretrievably, it is making her loose its definitive battle against Time.
