I construct containers to contain feelings, emotions that cannot be contained. Like a face displays an emotion I cut and weld the frames of the containers to express vulnerability as well as strength. Each cube is bolted to the one above/below and the cubes respond to each other. All in all it's a journey to the top with surprises on the way. The colours I am using are based on the sky at the end of a day, let's say the sunset passed through the boxes and a bit of the colours stuck to the frames. A snapshot of the memory of that moment before dark.

United Kingdom
Born on a farm in Germany - came to England in 1969. Live and work in South London in a converted church hall. My Dad introduced me to cosmology and that was a strong influence earlier on. Now I use my own daily experiences as an inspiration. I work with steel, chopping industrial angle section into random bits and welding these differently angled pieces into boxes which are freestanding or hang off the wall like giant birdboxes. It makes them appear human, vulnerable, chaotic, even funny. Parallel to that I carve marble sculptures in Italy. In 2006 I won a residency to learn to carve marble in Pietrasanta in Italy for three months. This material has opened up a perfect counter balance to steel. I carve away and reveal rather than construct.
