If we do not wear physical armour, we all wear emotional armour. To take it off, to let the weight drop from you, is a wonderful freeing experience, but it takes strength, confidence and faith to expose the soft and vulnerable underbelly of ones self. This sculpture consists of three pieces. The armour stand, made from steel and clay. The breast and back armour, made from stoneware clay, leather and bronze buckles. The horned helmet, made from stoneware clay. The viewer can, to a certain degree arrange and rearrange these elements.

Lerentia Basson Art Statement - Elusive concepts in solid form. “My world and life is covered in a thin layer of clay dust and that I accept, for I love clay, the smell, the feel, the texture, the possibilities…. Malleable like the ether, waiting to be molded into what the mind and emotion can conceive. To be sintered into reality and stone, by fire. I am inspired by reading esoteric and mystical sciences and am compelled to try and capture in solid form, these elusive concepts. Certain themes regularly run through my work:" 1. Part of the Whole: All life and life forms are interconnected. Every action and reaction is interwoven with all life and has consequences that ripple through time and space. 2. Creative beings: When we know and correctly apply the laws of correct thinking we constantly create and recreate our own reality. 3. Totems: Learning from other life forms and calling on their protection and knowledge - again interconnectedness. 4. Masks: Personas we create and recreate as we travel through life. They are also thrust upon us by circumstance and environment. We use them to impress, to portray ourselves and to hide behind. They may be beautiful and elaborate or strong and plain.
