About The Artwork

I often reflect on world political events in my work. Recently in ‘Thank god for abortion’ I reflected on the devastating Roe v Wade overturn. This wall hanging is made from linen, a textile that symbolises purity, and is hand dyed with indigo, a traditional dye that turns from light green to dark blue during the oxidisation process - a process of rapid transformation. The random embroidery lines were stitched blind while I repeated to myself the phrase ‘thank god for abortion’, over and over, as an attempt to embody my feelings about the phrase in thread. I chose pink, a symbol of femininity and innocence to contrast with the dark, and stereotypically ‘masculine’ blue. The back of the quilt features my hand sewn signature. Dimensions and materials: 55x58 cm, linen, cotton. Display notes: this wall hanging comes with a hand sewn hanging sleeve. All you have to do to beautifully display your new piece of art is purchase a plastic, metal or wooden rod from a building supply shop, have them cut it 4cm longer than the hanging sleeve and either hang over sturdy nails, or screw in screw eyes at each end and hang these over nails.

My name is Lila Chatfield and I am an artist focused on quilts and occasionally ceramics and painting, living in Brighton, UK. My colourful hand sewn wall hangings are narrative and expressive in style, embracing a contemporary folk aesthetic. Thematically, my work germinates from mundane happenings and often explores stories of mental states, cognitive dissonance and the edges of birth and death.I draw upon current popular culture, worldwide events and the wilderness of dreams to compose my work which features both abstract and figurative details. I play in an intuitive, improvisational way, often with discarded or vintage cloth and found objects. The boundaries of what is and isn’t a quilt are blurred in my work, which often features sculptural elements. My wall hangings are almost completely hand sewn, imbuing them with an organic feel that embraces the joy of the imperfect and the unexpected. A self-taught artist, I studied English and American Studies at the University of Sussex and worked as a secondary English teacher and later as an education officer before dedicating my time to my art practice.
