About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the line ' Every junkie's like a setting sun.... to me.", in Neil Young's timeless song " The Needle And The Damage Done. ". I have applied to his publisher's to use the line but have not heard back. I can't put my life on hold for the DMCA Agency. I'll keep trying. As a person who has lost many friends to the needle, and seen the damage done firsthand I feel more than qualified to make this visual statement.. I hope people will see this as an anti~hard~ drugs statement, it's not a lotta fun at the other end of the tunnel, believe me. .I could have surrounded the head with; burnt teaspoon, candles, tourniquet, lemons, filters, wraps and all the other paraphanaelia, but I wanted it to stand alone. As an anti Marcel Duchamp piece, it says to the chess loving, founder of modern ( sic ) art, "Check,Monsieur Duchamp, your move." To his followers the same. Marcel Duchamp , the man who ruined art. Some people who've already seen it have said 'it's sick but.' to 'cool', 'wonderful', 'clever'. and a couple of 'that's awesome'. That makes the stress and strain of the 5 years it's taken from a little germ of an idea to this worthwhile. I hope it is received well. It is my first piece of artwork away from painting. In 12 hypodermics, red paint is mixed with my own blood, DNA'd. On the reverse side of those 12 pieces when put together is a message only the eventual owner will receive.. The work will be set in an acrylic case, with a black base The hypodermic syringes used in this piece were not wanted back by the pharmacy, or NHS, as they were all out of date. The artist stuck himself with the needles only 6 times during the making of this piece, once needing a plaster !. No others were hurt in the making of this artwork. Unfortuately, this work won't now be entered into The Royal Western Academy Open Summer Exhibition, alongside Marilyn 2014 in July.

Multi -Prize and Award Winning Artist, Marc Monroe, was born in London in 1954.Now lives in The Valley's of South Wales. UK. Marc has worked in film, theatre and radio but settled as an artist. Still with a great passion for film and theatre. He comes from 'a show biz family', which goes back 3 generations. 'I am a self taught artist who paints with "what I have or what I can afford, while always trying to come up with something new." ' I taught myself to draw and paint while in jail during the1970's and 80's, for various drink, drug related crimes. My chosen subject, portraiture of beauty: of the body, mind or spirit.(Rarely do all 3 collide.) It's always been about the 'real beautiful people'. Now after years of bright light and 'pretty', it's time for me to go dark. Show you the real horror that lurks beneath. I don't have any long rambling pseudo-intellectual crap to expound on art. I just love painting and art. Stepping firmly into the 6th Age of Man, my electric butterfly mind still flutters somewhere between : "Ziggy Stardust and The Hubble Telescope ", (With one eye on The James Webb Telescope.) Comfortable in my 5th garret period, work sometimes means giving up my bedroom for weeks. A studio is a dream. My work is sometimes coded, (DNA - my blood), has a simple message in it or maybe a visual gag. Any use of symbols is especially limited. With 31 years experience, all that I really have learned is that " the pursuit of perfection is a bloody nuisance" I live a semi- reclusive life 1150 ft up a mountain in the Valleys of SE Wales. I love "˜the arts' , "˜good' rock music, comedy and the peace and quiet of the night, usually painting through it into the early hours. My chrono gene is set to the night !. My favourite artists' quote is a simple truth, " An artist works best when he's hungry." Attributed to Vincent Van Gogh.' Marc Monroe.Last Updated : 15th August 2019
