About The Artwork

"The Tourist" is a two-dimensional hanging wall art piece composed of solid Mahogany, Jacaranda, Lacewood and Black Walnut wood assembled in a parquet technique. The colors, patterns, and gradients that you see are natural to the wood and not painted or stained in any way whatsoever. The Jacaranda was taken from a tree in my own yard in Sarasota and the Mahogany was salvaged from a piece of furniture that was being discarded. The size of the piece is 33" x 15" - All of my wood pieces have a 3/4 inch mounting panel permanently adhered to the back and offset from the edge by several inches to make the piece "float" on the wall. The mounting panel has two keyholes for hanging in a designated orientation. The piece has been finished with a gloss "conversion varnish" that can be lightly sanded and re-coated by a professional furniture refinisher in the event something happens to the surface of the piece. It should be noted that the wood may change color slightly as it ages and might change dramatically if positioned in direct sunlight.

I didn't set out to be an "eco-artist" but that is the avenue my newer works have taken. These works are made mostly from wood that has been acquired by way of "urban timbering." This involves taking down dead or unwanted trees in an urban environment and milling them up for use in my art, thus circumventing wood that was acquired by way of deforestation I'm very lucky to live an area that can support the cultivation of many native and exotic species of trees that are the sources of many common hardwoods. Even better, I use woods that are very uncommon, many of which have unique colors and characteristics that wouldn't be desirable in cabinetry but perfect for my art. I've created a blog that chronicles my conquests of wood - http://urbantimerbing.tumblr.com The product is a series of hard-edge abstractions that are reminiscent of painters like Frank Stella, Harvey Quaytman and Greg Bogin. However, instead of using paint, my palette - and canvas - is wood. The natural colors and figures in the wood serve as an inspiration for the abstract configurations. It may sound silly, but the wood tells me what to do. Sometimes in a cerebral way and sometimes more literally by breaking.
