Sculpture, Metal on Plastic

Ships in a Crate
The work was inspired by the window of an ancient monument in India dating back to about 1575. This is a mirrored sculpture that gives the impression of a arched window. As you move, the sculpture changes as the reflections change. Your feel like your are looking through a window. The medium is a mirrored aluminum composite with plastic and vinyl. The `Tree of Life’ appears in the writings of many faiths. It symbolizes a multitude of things: The connection between heaven and earth for example. For me the roots represent where I come from, the trunk is who I am, the branches are the paths I have taken and the leaves are the events and memories associated with that journey. The flowers are the moments of joy and the fruits are the product of my endeavors.

I was born in Mumbai, India. At the age of 5, the family moved to Kenya and later to the UK. My fascination and love for art grew from an early age progressing from painting to sculpture and photography. As a child nothing was more absorbing or fulfilling as creating forms with plasticine, mud, plaster of Paris and clay. At a sculpture studio next to my primary school in Mumbai, I would watch in awe as master artisans released the forms of Gandhi, Nehru and others from their marble and granite prisons. In Kenya I marveled at the animal sculptures carved in soapstone by local craftsmen. At school in the UK, I taught myself sculpture for my A’ Levels as no teacher was available to do so. Unbeknown to me I struggled with dyslexia but somehow managed to gain a degree in Biochemistry with honors’ and then went on to graduate as a dentist from the University of London. To help pay my way through university, I designed and made jewelry. I call these my mini sculptures. 20 years ago the smoldering embers of my creative passion burst into flame and since then I have worked as a sculptor. I look at the world through open eyes and unconstrained mind. This approach helps me absorb that which has gone before and to create something very unique now. My sculptures are the result of keen observation and meditation. The source of much of his inspiration comes from my travels and the rich history of Art in Asia, Africa and Europe has influenced my choice of subject. I am passionate about color and movement and forge these together with form and texture to breathe life and meaning into my creations. Some have an ethereal quality, appearing to defy gravity while others celebrate the joy of life and our ever-changing world. I use clean lines and simple shapes to distil the essence of a complex subject. The Last Supper is one such example. "Sculpting gives meaning to my life and tranquility to my soul."
