About The Artwork
Dance is a cathartic release for deep emotions - the kind you feel down in your bones. As a boy, I spent nearly every Sunday in church. If you’re unfamiliar with Pentecostal churches of the 70’s, I can tell you people called them “holy rollers” for a reason. The gospel music and speaking in tongues made it a very exciting place for a rambunctious boy who couldn’t sit still. Gospel and blues music have a long and storied relationship. “Study for Twist and Shout I” was inspired by both - especially the music of blues greats like B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. This sculpture is a about the expression of emotions we feel way down in our bones.
