About The Artwork

Watch a video of the Debt Dolls visiting Times Square at the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miCh6VYXNd4 This was the first doll I made for the Debt Doll project. After numerous prototypes I decided to use the gold PVC fabric with screen printed designs so that the dolls would allude to money. It is filled with sand because debt is heavy. The physical feel of the doll is smooth to the touch and feels a little like pleather. The doll weighs about 5 pounds, so you can work out with it too! Oh, it is hand sewn too. My friend Noah Fischer ( initiator of Occupy Museums) asked me to exhibit something for his project called Debt Fair in 2014, so I exhibited the Debt Doll Project.

Lucas Berd is originally from Lubbock, Texas and has an immense adoration for the boundless landscapes of the Southwest, especially New Mexico. Berd has exhibited in and out of traditional artist spaces but prefers to work towards an autonomous platform where the artist plays more of an entrepreneurial role. Instead of waiting to be accepted or chosen for opportunities, Berd enjoys self-generating opportunities. Berd works under several pseudonyms including, Lucas Berd, Berd and Berdscarnival. Lucas has worked closely with the artist collective, Occupy Museums and under the influence of Noah Fisher, the group's initiating member. In 2012, the collective exhibited in the Berlin Biennale and more recently, the Whitney Biennial, New York City in 2017. Amongst other things, Berd is highly influenced by Folk art, street culture and American popular culture. Working in variety of mediums and techniques, Berd is interested in unpredictability and will abruptly shift the direction of the artwork in order to disorient the viewer. Berd currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and works as a security guard at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lasty, Berd owns and runs a carnival and is always looking for monetary support and or/space to exhibit it.
