About The Artwork

This tall slim nautical vessel is made from driftwood collected on the Scottish East coast. Along with other small pieces of flotsam, they have been combined, painted, and made into a potent treasure. The wood was lost overboard in a north sea storm, possibly cut loose to save the lives of the crew. Like most of us, it's lived through a lot. It holds its own wisdom and is now being set sail again on the next leg of its journey. The ship has become a kind of reliquary, representing a human journey, containing some inner fears, desires and beliefs - all of which must ultimately be let go. The boat is solid wood painted in acrylic, sealed with matt varnish and buffed to a sheen with furniture wax. The stand is mild steel and the boat simply slots onto a long spike welded to the base. Behind the glass panel is one of the oddest things I've picked up on the coast; a plastic toy child's fingernail along with two corroded coins. This is one of many boats I make. each one is thoroughly unique, made from objects that have arrived on my shore and appealed to me at that time. These are pieces from the heart. Large enough to 'ground' a space and slim enough for a hallway, this boat will make a beautiful statement.

I'm an artist based in East Lothian (Scottish North Sea Coast.) My work is a celebration of the crazy circus we call life. The small windows are a common motif in my work, representing the silent witness inside each of us, that we can maybe feel behind our eyes, looking out upon the bizarre dramas of this parade. I work in sculpture, painting and drawing, my preference is for narrative imagery which comes to me unannounced (from my subconscious?) My job is a humble one; simply to make the marks that represent these images as best I can. The narrative imagery invites interpretation from each viewer, it's fun, quirky, can be a little cheeky, and at other times a touch sorrowful. I recommend viewing it with your heart and not your mind. But in either case, my wish is simply that it's enjoyed.. Damian
