About The Artwork

This piece was made on my master's course on an art therapy module. We were asked to think about the first time we had a distinct memory of making art. For me this was when my great aunty allowed me to draw over her kitchen wall in conte pencil when I was about 9 or 10 years old. I drew battle scenes with knights, monsters and warriors. I was encouraged to do this and I covered the entire wall with my drawings. The energy, the excitement, the spontaneity and the love of the material inspired me to make this playful sculptural piece.

Born 1979 in Edinburgh

My work is always developing and changing in response to the many different areas where I have lived, to the materials that are available locally for me to use and to the processes that I have selected to record the artistic images that I am seeking.

Initially, my work focused upon producing a wide range of sculptures for display both indoors and in the open air. In particular, I concentrated upon making large land art sculptures set in the open countryside. These structures used materials such as stone, wood, mud and vegetation that I could collect within a short distance of the site where the sculpture was to be built. Normally, these locations were remote, secluded areas free from the impact of modern technology and crowded humanity. Having identified a location, my objective was to produce a series of nest-like forms that drew their inspiration from elements that occurred in the natural world. This art form was based upon creating an idyllic place of refuge where I could distance myself from the stresses and the insecurities of the modern world. A further element in the design was that, as the materials available locally offered minimal resistance to the effects of wind and rain, the visual qualities of the sculpture changed rapidly as the effects of weathering took place. On this basis, I found that the artistic qualities in the structure evolved in ways that could not be anticipated when the original concept was formulated.

Following a period as artist in residence at the Cyprus College of Art, my recent work have been extended to cover the fields of painting, photography, video and computer graphics. Whilst I am still interested in the same concepts that are inherent in my sculptures, these themes are expressed through different methods of application. My painting is energetic, colourful and the compositions are often very busy. However, there are many focal points of refuge allowing the viewer to focus in on and take rest from the chaos that surrounds them. The works have been inspired by Alan Davie, Joan Miro and the surroundings at the Cyprus college of art.
