Ships in a Crate
From Womb to Tomb is an original hand-carved sculpture made from oolite limestone. The stone is rhomboid shaped (55x35x27cm) and rotates on a swivel base mounted on a solid block of pink granite (10x30x44cm). With many facets, symbols and iconography, the work is an allegory and represents life from birth to death. Full of intricate details, the piece (carved straight to stone with no model) tells the facts of our physical reality with spiritual overtones. The rope around the androgynous character's neck shows we are condemned to death; The heart in the egg-timer signifies the void into which our heartbeats fall. The mouse whispering in the ear suggests we are bound to the ground, scarcely noticing the higher things to which we can aspire. Set atop the skull is the labyrinth we all enter and below the coffin for when we leave. Other symbols are meaning are only privy to the buyer.
