Description: From the series Optical Phenomena as Architectonic Elements.The research project 'Optical Phenomena as Architectonic Elements' focuses on the effects produced by natural light in combination with glass.Glass is, as an unequalled constructional element, widely used in architecture. The purpose of the investigation is to highlight the rich and yet unexploited possibilities for glass in both contemporary art and architecture.The work is furthermore about light refraction, how it originates, its influence on the human eye and how light diverts when it passes through materia with the main focus on the optical properties of glass, and the phenomena of light.

Past: founder of the Vrij Glas foundation, a laboratory for innovation in glass and artist-in-residence program Through her work Carlgren wants to create means for a new way of viewing our surroundings. She makes non-technical instruments, which multiply, enlarge, reduce, absorb, and partly or fully deform the environment. Carlgren uses (and misuses) glass and its optical qualities in order to create a visual play. Whereas a painter or sculptor creates a new reality she leaves this process to the material and therewith to the viewers.
