An ghost-like infant, dressed in ceremonial white, sitting on a large red velvet cushion and holding a rusty remote control. She is facing a large window that seems to be suggesting a television screen on which we see the title of the work, “Please don’t move”. Such are the confines of a sculptural work that focuses on a scenario, that of infancy, of particular resonance for this artist. Our society looks at the world of infants with unprecedented attention, also in ways that are contradictory, involving the manipulation of children’s needs, the exploitation and seduction of innocent infants. Infants seduced by advertising, already victims of consumerism, lonely and mesmerized in front of the TV, also known as the 3rd parent. All the force in this work is generated by the alternation of presence and absence pervading it at every level, from the physical (the materials used, the drapery of the dress, the infant’s head) to the merely conceptual (reflecting the relationship with television). The infant’s identity is felt as a mirror held up to our society, a key to understanding errors in the present but also a metaphor for our potential, a way of redeeming our future.
