About The Artwork

Bats play an important role in many environments around the world. Some plants depend wholly on bats for pollination or seed dispersion; bats also help control pests and disease by eating insects. Bats also are among the most under-studied of mammals. There are currently 24 bat species as Critically Endangered, meaning they face an imminent risk of extinction. Fifty-three others are Endangered, and 104 bat species are considered Vulnerable. This work was commissioned by Mary Jean Tasillo for a wonderful young woman who shares my concern for endangered animals. Without her prompting I might have never thought to create such a piece. For every print of this piece sold, a donation will be made toward animal conservation efforts.

I first began working in collage when I wasn't to buy paints and canvas, but after trying other media I still find collage the most satisfying. I like the thought of turning ephemeral, mass-produced magazine images into something unique and lasting. There is a particular flow to certain curves that feels both right and compelling to me, like the sight of a road winding out of sight that beckons me to follow it. Curves appear prominently in my work because I want to take that road, to explore that line, wherever it leads.
