Blue Sky with four white clouds II Print

When I picture clouds, in my minds eye, I'm lying on my back in the grass looking up... except when I picture sunrise or sunset clouds; then, the self of my imagination, is sitting by water. Images of clouds have appeared in my artwork over the years, but I think this is my first time really focusing on the shapes of groups of clouds, like small flocks of sheep they can gather in groups, and this series of cloud silhouettes celebrates that aspect of clouds. The positive and negative spaces are explored with colour in or around the silhouettes, and the backgrounds feature colours of summer skies, dusk, dawn and sunsets too. Blue skies painted background was made with watercolour crayon and acrylic paint. This painted background is a combination of watercolour crayon and a layer of sponge painted acrylic overtop, mimicking the pattern of distant clouds against a sky of a blue I normally only see in summer on the west coast, but occasionally saw on bright winter days in Ontario. The image of a blue sky has come to be associated, in my mind, with some of my favorite meditation teachers, suggesting that thoughts, like clouds, can be permitted to drift off, leaving the blue sky of a clear mind. I hope this image gives you a peaceful feeling.
