Working in international development has inspired me to work on portraits of notable women. Condoleeza Rice, as the first African American woman Secretary of State, oversaw USAID where I work. She is also a very interesting woman-a world class level pianist, major American football fan. So I depicted some of these interests and her African American heritage in the portrait. - fabric Music notes are everywhere, there are a piano and a few football images in her hair. Fabric is a unique medium that allows me tremendous opportunity for depth and detail and texture. I hope people will view this portrait for the impact of the overall woman and not just from a political lens. The artwork is produced by sketching outline with pencil on canvas and then "painting" by cutting and gluing tiny pieces of fabric. the entire work is just one medium
