The story of Slaves arriving in the French influenced area of New Orleans is truly a tale of Slavery and horror but yet seemly romantic in New Orleans. I created this piece because of how they would shine the slaves up with lard to make their skin shine and make them attractive to other slave owners. My thought is that when slaves would be whipped and their skin would break open the would actually be gold underneath. That's why the piece is called Ode to black Gold its a tribute to this time when Slaves are considered just property but they are one of the most important assets to the skim of the construction of this country. I hope viewers feel the sense of admiration and respect I pay to this time period and those who came thru Congo Square. The medium I chose helped me tell the story and create the profile of the slave with the chain around his neck. The see this piece in person is captivating
