Scars of gold: In 16th-century Japan, as Zen Buddhism became more widespread, a new aesthetic principle developed - wabi sabi. At the heart of this outlook is simplicity and an appreciation of imperfection: nothing remains, nothing is completed, and nothing is perfect. It is against this background that Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese method of repairing ceramics, was born. It involves gluing broken pieces together with a gold compound that highlights the flaw. The idea behind this is that all things are unique and a breakage is not the end. If the repair or healing is done artfully with much love and attention, a much stronger, new work of art can be created from what is broken and imperfect. I would like to take up this thought in my series "Resilience". The individual parts of the collage are therefore sewn together with gold thread. The new "patched together" personality is - precisely because of the experiences it has made - nobler and richer than before. Frida Kahlo de Rivera: She was a Mexican painter who lived at the beginning of the 20th century. As a child, Frida lived relatively comfortably and sheltered, however her life changed when she was 17. In a bus accident, a steel rod pierced her pelvis, so from then on she had to spend her daily life lying down and in a full-body cast or steel corset. During this time, she initially began painting in bed to pass the time. Painting, however, quickly became a means of expressing her anguish and grief. For although Frida learned to walk again against all medical prognoses, she was no longer able to have children and was often in severe pain. Frida was interested in photography as a child and was a close observer. But would she ever have been so intensively involved with painting if she had not been confined to bed for so long? And what pictures, if any, would she have painted then? Would they be as familiar to us today?

Every painting I paint leaves me with a strong impression. I dream of the subject, fall in love with it and carry it around with me at least during the time of creation. I hope to pass on some of the impact a subject made on me.
