About The Artwork

I'm fascinated by the fashion industry. To look at me, you'd never know this! However, I'm drawn to the world of high fashion because of its beauty (the models, the clothes), and strangeness, its playfulness, its surrealism, its excess... I subscribe to several fashion magazines for all the reasons I listed above, but especially because I love fashion photography. I'm a trained photographer, so I have a strong appreciation for the incredible technical expertise that goes into orchestrating a photo shoot. I'm constantly amazed by how inventive the photographs are -- the sets, the color, and the "performances" of the models. The collages I'm presenting here are a tribute to the photographs I see in the magazines -- but they're also a big departure. Briefly, this is my method: I love the tactile, the handling of my materials; I begin by cutting out figures and other elements from the magazine pages, then proceed to erase most of the image. This may seem absurd, but in doing so, I can "riff" off of the original image, while having a relatively clean slate on which to create my own world. It is a very intuitive process. I add flowers, ladders, rocks and other forms that I cut out of the magazines, as well as colored paper, and pastel and paint. The world that remains is part fantasy, part mystical, part playful. And joyful. A new kind of beauty. The meaning of the work is very much open to the viewer -- I enjoy letting the viewer generate her/his own ideas about the work. But most of all, I hope to bring joy to the viewer.

I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. I left when I was 18, and for several years led a somewhat itinerant life in both England and the United States. I was searching for a meaningful way to live my life. I loved art with a passion, but it didn't occur to me that I could create it myself until I enrolled in an art photography class at the age of 34. I fell in love with it! I went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and a Master's Degree in Fine Art Photography. My tastes in photography are extremely wide-ranging and I try to keep an open mind. However, I can pinpoint portraiture as something I love and that underlies some of my work. And -- though it may be unfashionable to say so: I love beauty! But I feel strongly that it's possible to make an image that is beautiful and meaningful, in an artistic sense. So given the above, why am I presenting collages here? The simple answer is that it's my most recent work and seems the most relevant. I love all art media...and so it doesn't seem inappropriate to me to experiment with a different medium. Its genesis is quite mysterious to me, however: shortly after I moved to a small town in North Carolina in December of 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic entered our lives. I couldn't photograph outside, so I began working with various materials I'd amassed -- magazines, tissue paper, pastels. What emerged, strangely, was a body of work with (mostly) exuberant figures, bright -- almost psychedelic -- colors, and an overall energy that I loved. It seemed to defy the pessimism and fear of the pandemic. The work was extremely intuitive and, frankly, defies explanation. It is mysterious and open to interpretation.
