This piece is about what it means to be carefree and constrained at the same time; and how the embodiment and balancing of both, the qualities on the surface seem oxymoronic and contradictory, make for creative and profound life. When making this piece, I was cognizant of my desire and intention to portray a sense of freedom through randomly placed and shaped geometric objects while projecting a sense of decorum by maintaining rather stringent lines across those objects. The process of creating this piece involved gluing several layers of ivory and brown paper on top of each other; and peeled in straight lines once the surface dried, leaving rough textures produced by paper residues and debris.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
