About The Artwork

One of 12 works in my Birds of America series, a surrealist trip on flight and longing and desire in a conceptual fashion. Works on paper using vintage materials. I have always been interested in birds and flight and of course our notion of leaving the restraints of gravity and our oftentimes failure to do so in both reality and in our dreams... I always work with paper and collage. And I usually combine images and words or numbers to produce linguistic anomalies and puns. ~Matthew Rose / Paris, France

MATTHEW ROSE lives and works in Paris, France. https://youtu.be/e-u9r7y_tVg Known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor installations, he graduated from Brown University (1981) with a degree in Semiotics/Linguistics. Influenced by Americans Ray Johnson, Jasper Johns, Joseph Cornell and a handful of French surrealists, Rose works late hours ripping apart paper and bits of text to remake contemporary life into a specific, yet unbound book, what the artist calls his “theory of everything.” "Most of my work involves collage; I cut and paste in all flavors. But I draw, paint, sculpt, find, assemble and put together words as well. I'm always working, I never close." CURRENTLY: Published Coronaville. A graphic novella about the Trump Pandemic.
