About The Artwork

Often times my work is titled at a later date. The Empress of Ice Cream was created a year before I knew the following poem existed. Once brought to my attention that the two's meanings were one in the same, The Empress was finally named. The Emperor of Ice-Cream - Wallace Stevens Call the roller of big cigars, The muscular one, and bid him whip In kitchen cups concupiscent curds. Let the wenches dawdle in such dress As they are used to wear, and let the boys Bring flowers in last month's newspapers. Let be be finale of seem. The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream. Take from the dresser of deal, Lacking the three glass knobs, that sheet On which she embroidered fantails once And spread it so as to cover her face. If her horny feet protrude, they come To show how cold she is, and dumb. Let the lamp affix its beam. The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.

Allie Ellis uses the self-coined term “Pop Art Collage” to describe her humorous, tongue-in-cheek works on paper. Utilizing paper ephemera from the 1940’s to the 60’s, along with whatever other materials seem to strike her fancy, gives her work a distinctive and playful tone. While often the work can be seen as colorful and light, her pieces generally have a subtle melancholy undertone behind the whimsical wit. That fine line between surface joy and subsurface tension is a key moniker in many of her pieces.
